I have just upgraded from ff 3.6 and lost the possibility to open a new tab next to the active one (all new tabs are opened on the end of the active tabs). Is there any way to fix it? I am not sure if this possibility in ff3.6 was due to an addon (new tab king, next tab??) but i neither fix it nor find any answer on the web.

Set the pref browser.tabs.insertRelatedAfterCurrent to true on the about:config page.

To open the about:config page, type about:config in the location (address) bar and press the "Enter" key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website.
If you see a warning then you can confirm that you want to access that page.

Thank you for the quick answer, but the problem is, the pref browser.tabs.insertRelatedAfterCurrent is set to true. I tried to change it to false/ restart FF/ back to true/ restart FF, but it did not help. By using the icon Open a new tab, the new tab is still opened and the end of all tabs in the group regardless to the active tab. Maybe some other ideas?

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.

  • Use "Disable all add-ons" on the Safe mode start window to disable all extensions.
  • Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

In Firefox 4 you can use one of these to start in Safe mode:

  • Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • Hold down the Shift key while double clicking the Firefox desktop shortcut (Windows)

In Safe Mode the problem occurs also. The browser.tabs.insertRelatedAfterCurrent is still set to true.

That pref setting only applies if you click a link on a web page to open that link in a new tab. Tabs that you open otherwise will open at the far right and you would need the drag that tab yourself to another position.

cor-el: thanks, this means the requested behavior is possible only by installing some addon which is probably not compatible with ver ff4 right now, because in ff3.6 it was possible to open a NEW (not linked) tab next to the active.

Xircal: thanks, by this addon does not match my need, i asked about the possibility to open a NEW TAB (using default ff icon) next to current active tab.
