I have been using FF 4ever.

After the update to firefox 16, when I drop the bookmark menu down, scrolling thru the menu, the movement is laggy, like stuttering.

If I leave the menu down on the screen and move the cursor across the menu, the mouse pauses and jumps like 3" on the screen. like it hits a border and sticks then jumps across. But then I test and move the mouse across all menus and its laggy. but once I surf or click on a link, its fine. I disabled hardware Accel. to test, no help. I did a clean install of FF by cleaning and deleting all mozilla and firefox folders. no help. So I downgraded to 15.0.1 and all is well. I tested 15 and 16 both with importing the bookmarks and only FF16 is having this issue.

Did you restart Firefox after disabling hardware acceleration??

more options

Thanks for replying, yes I restarted

Still same issue.

Seems like it happens when I import the bookmarks.

when the default bookmark menu is there, which is empty there is no lag.

I was going to start saving links one by one, but after I installed 15. 0.1, FF16 was no longer there to download.

what in the bookmarks could cause this stutter or lag?

Regards

Not sure.... you could try to Export bookmarks to HTML... via Bookmarks library (Alt + B) > Show All Bookmarks > Import and Backup, install Firefox 16.0, rename/move the places.sqlite file in the Firefox Profile Folder after exiting Firefox, and then Import Bookmarks from HTML... and check. Please note that this would forfeit your history. If the problem persists you can exit Firefox, and copy/overwrite the old places.sqlite file which also restores your history.

To open the profile folder via Firefox: Help (Alt + H) > Troubleshooting Information > Show Folder.

I will try the methods once the updated FireFox 16 with patch is released and continue to test.

Weird how after all these builds from firefox 2 this issue pops up.

I even uninstalled and deleted all traces of firefox and mozilla folders.

no trace and reinstalled but still the lag.

thanks I will report once the FF16 is installed.

Problems with bookmarks and history not working properly can be caused by a corrupted places.sqlite database file.

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database file in the Firefox Profile Folder.

You can try to check and repair the places database with this extension:

Update

As told I reset firefox , renamed and moved the folders, no avail.

Here is what I did, I reinstalled 16.0.1 and it still froze on the bookmark menu. So again disabled hardware acceleration and restarted and problem was solved. This time unticking that option worked.

So I updated the ATi drivers and re enabled the hardware acceleration but the stutter came back, so for now I leave the hardware acc. alone

Thanks guys for your input.

Thanks for the update. Please also see this. If the requirements are okay, you could consider filing a bug report. You may also want to create a new profile, temporarily disable security software (antivirus), check the bookmark menu before and after populating with bookmarks, check the other menus etc. before filing the bug.

Weird thing is that if I revert back to FF15, everything works with HA enabled and full bookmark menu.

but its a no go with FF16

You can check the status between Firefox 15 and 16 in Help (Alt + H) > Troubleshooting Information, under Graphics for Direct2D Enabled, DirectWrite Enabled and GPU Accelerated Windows.

You can also check the Error Console for errors when this happens (open the Error Console and click Clear before trying to reproduce the above event).

You can also try to check the Windows Event Viewer (Windows Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer) when reproducing this; specifically the Application and System branches (on the left). Right-click and Clear all Events for easy viewing before trying to reproduce the problem.

Ok ,

I will see the check between both and report back any differences.

What is weird is that if I dont open the bookmar menu all is fine and all other menus are ok.

The minute I open a full bookmarks with about 75 bookmarks, the lagging begins.

Thanks

No problem :)

(I've updated my previous answer - the Event Viewer path was wrong, sorry about that.)

You may also want to temporarily disable any security software (antivirus, firewall etc.).

If there are pending "Optional" OS updates (start menu > All Programs > Windows Update) esp. related to GDI+, fonts etc. you can try to update.

Update

I checked the FF15 and FF16 graphics and they are the same.

then I checked the error log under web developer, there are always 5 errors when I restart FF and clear the logs.

what does this mean?

These are informational Warnings and Messages which usually do not have an immediate impact and can be safely ignored. The first two are probably related to missing global add-ons, the third one seems to be to the default theme, the fourth one to a probably deprecated feature and the last message seems to indicate everything is okay on the graphics front.

You can also try to Reset Firefox (it looks like all the Mozilla and Firefox folders weren't manually deleted).

The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information. Note: This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.

To Reset Firefox do the following:

  1. Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
  2. Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
  3. Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
  4. Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.

Further information can be found in the Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings article.

Alright, so I retested and

So FF 16 with HA enabled makes my bookmark menu lag horribly.

going back to ff 15.0.1 everything is ok.

so I think somewhere, in the rendering of the UI something is not jiving with my system.

so for now, I will stick with FF 15

I tried all combinations and fixes, resets and renaming and moving folder, nothing with HA works in ff16 for me.

I tried the beta and still no go. maybe I should try Aurora to see?

thanks guys

As a last test I will run Windows XP in safe-mode.

I will leave FF16 with HWA enable. To see if its a conflict with ATI graphics driver

UPDATE

I ran firefox in safemode and everthing was buttery smooth. Even with all bookmarks loaded. I noticed that the default theme was disabled too.

So, I thought the theme was not being installed right on my system or something weird.

So I downloaded another basic theme like Firefox White and it works and runs smooth.

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/simplewhite/ Weird,

so for now, I am running 16.0.2 with new theme and Hardware Acceleration on and all is well.

Thanks

I've got the same issue with the latest nightly builds, the bookmark menu is very slow with hardware acceleration on, even in safe mode.

Yes, I can verify that there is something wrong with the default theme post v15. I'm on a Mac and I had the same issue with lagging bookmark scrolling and updating. Changing to Firefox White made the problem go away. I have lots of extensions, so it would be a pain to reinstall them all. I'm sticking with Firefox White for now.
