How do you make it so that when you use ctrl-F to find a word within a webpage, and then the up- or down-arrows to jump to the next result, it will show up within the visible portion of the page and not off the screen where you can't see it?

Problem Description:

Half the time when I search for a word within a web page (with ctrl-f) and there are several results, and I use the up- or down-arrows (next to the search field) to jump to the next result, the result is outside the portion of the webpage that is visible.

That is, I've been jumped to somewhere that is a half or 1 or 2 or 10 screens above, or below, the next result.

You're forced to page-up or -down hunting around for the highlighted result and by that time you have no idea where you are in relation to the previous highlighted result.

This defeats the purpose of the 'next result' arrows, because you end up having to go back to the top, select 'Highlight All', and then manually page down one page at a time through the entire webpage.

Sometimes the arrows do properly jump to the next result so that it's within the 'view'. It seems completely random.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window
