- What type of email account is it (IMAP or POP)?
- Who is the email provider (GMail, other webmail, self-hosted..)?
Please consider creating a new thread about the groups email issue. Having one thread per question makes it easier to answer, read and search for them.

According to the web browser used to post this question, you are using Thunderbird for Mac.
POP accounts have several options to deal with deleted email (or its retention). Can you double-check if your settings match desired behavior under Tools > Account Settings > Account name > Server Settings ?
i'm using a PC with win 7 not a mac
Regardless, the menus are the same for WIndows or Mac.
