Firefox stores the bookmarks and the browsing history in a SQLite database file named places.sqlite. Firefox stores the bookmarks and the browser history in places.sqlite and no longer uses an HTML file or creates an HTML backup for the bookmarks.

Firefox keeps rotating daily JSON backups (bookmarks-####-##-##_xxxx.json) of the bookmarks in the bookmarkbackups folder within the Firefox profile folder up to a maximum of 10. There is currently a hash value appended that makes it possible to check if a backup is needed or that there have been no changes.

You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:

  • Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)
