My Java plugin crashes today, after refreshing it kept crashing so I stopped working. next time I turned on Firefox it said I don't have Java installed at all and the plugin vanished.

this is the second time this happened over the last month, both times were on separate Java applets.

one was an SSH access applet, the other was an Applet for submitting exercises/home assignments, both sites are operated by my university, the Technion, although I asked around and no other student seem to have had crashing or disappearing Java plugin.

Oh probably should've mentioned, those crashes seem random, I enter those sites several times every day and it only happened twice out of the dozens if not hundreds of entries over the last month to those applets. I have no idea why it crashes.

Try to delete the pluginreg.dat file in the Firefox Profile Folder and maybe addons.sqlite as well to reset the plugin registry databases.

See Re-initializing the plugins database:

You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:

  • Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)
