I went to download the English (British) dictionary (smaller version, the larger one said it was not compatible with this version of Thunderbird) but then my computer warned me it was an unknown author and might contain malicious software. Probably just a generic warning, but how DO I know the dictionaries offered are safe? On my other laptop the dictionary is English (United Kingdom) so it appears to have changed since I downloaded T'bird last time.

I'd consider a dictionary as safe when downloading it from AMO (Add-ons Mozilla.org). https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/extensions/language-support/

Thank you for the quick reply. So I tried to download the dictionary but couldn't figure out how to make it happen, so after all that, I've given up. Pity the process wasn't as easy as a few years ago when I first downloaded T'bird and with no trouble at all got myself the English (UK) version. Ah well. US English will have to do! Cheers.

It isn't rocket science. You press the 'Download Now' button, and follow the instructions in the pop-up.

Yep, tried that, I'm not completely stupid. For some reason it didn't work. Not important for now, I'll look at it again next time I have spare time, which isn't now. Thanks for your time.
