Thunderbird 38.4.0 very slow to open or delete messages (5 or more seconds) CAUSE: Bitdefender AV
Thunderbird very slow to open or delete messages. Have compacted folders, emptied Junk and trash folders, no improvement. Just upgraded (about 3 hours ago) to 38.4.0

Problem turned out to be interference from BitDefender. A little more searching found a possible help: "Uninstall and re-install BitDefender". Did that, and problem solved.
