You can try these steps in case of issues with web pages:

You can reload web page(s) and bypass the cache to refresh possibly outdated or corrupted files.

  • Hold down the Shift key and left-click the Reload button
  • Press "Ctrl + F5" or press "Ctrl + Shift + R" (Windows,Linux)
  • Press "Command + Shift + R" (Mac)

Clear the Cache and remove the Cookies from websites that cause problems.

"Clear the Cache":

  • Firefox/Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Cached Web Content: "Clear Now"

"Remove the Cookies" from websites that cause problems:

  • Firefox/Tools > Options > Privacy > "Use custom settings for history" > Cookies: "Show Cookies"

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (3-bar Menu button/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: 3-bar Menu button/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

There is security software that can interfere with loading content, so check that as well.

Hi cor-el,

Thanks very much for your very good suggestions for resolving my problem with slow running hotmail/outlook using firefox.

Before proceeding with your suggestions I noted that my email inbox contained approximately 2000 messages. I was using my inbox as a storage place for messages I was not ready to delete. When starting Outlook, it took a long time to download all those messages from the server (if I understand the process correctly). This kept firefox busy and it was unable to do anything else. I could not read a message until all email folders were downloaded.

I proceeded to delete about 90% of the messages in my inbox and noticed that this speeded up my system significantly. The deleted messages went into the deleted folder and I believe still had to be downloaded at startup, which caused a delay but not as bad as previously. Once the email folders were downloaded the read message response time was very good.

One thing I don't understand is why did Internet Explorer process my emails without the long delays I experienced with firefox? Perhaps the Internet Explorer email processing is a stripped down version(?).

My analysis of the situation may be faulty. I don't know enough about current Internet computer systems, though in the distant past I was an EE, programmer and systems analyst.

Thanks very much for your assistance. Any comments you might have would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Dante Medici
