How do I not display the open message pane when viewing my inbox?

I've just switched to using Thunderbird from Windows Live Mail with Windows 7 Home Premium op sys. I prefer to view my inbox with the message list only and then open the message if desired. I cannot figure out how to remove the open message pane that is constantly there in my inbox. Using the view tab under the menu bar does not offer me any option to change the look of my inbox page.
