TBird mail not saving email setting, this drives me crazy...please help
I'm stumped by this issue.... having Win7 64bit Installed latest TB v52.5.2, then setting up imap email account, then downloading all email from the Cox server. Next time I open TB all email setting are gone including all emails and it's asking me setup new account!!?
I tried at least 10x, reinstall program, restart the computer and no matter what the email account setting won't save. Any idea what's wrong here?

Please check properties prefs.js file in Thunderbird profile folder - does it indicate read-only?
Start *Windows'* safe mode with networking enabled - win7 https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/17419/windows-7-advanced-startup-options-safe-mode#start-computer-safe-mode=windows-7
Does problem go away?

Well, you must be a genius... the "prefs.js" had no check mark for read-only, no help Then I went into the Safe mode and finally the mail account didn't disappear after TB reopening! I went into normal mode and it was still working. Then I tried to setup the second mail account in normal mode, again no luck. Evidently in my case the TB will keep mail accounts only if I set them up in the Safe mode which is really weird. I wish to know what's the reason for something like that. (..tried to disable AV but it had no effect..) Anyway, the Safe mode solution is not perfect but at least it works so thank you so much for that. I would never figure out something like that.
Now I just hope I can migrate all my 6 Eudora mail accounts in Safe mode as well. For that reason I had to install TB v17 first. it went surprisingly very well, obviously till I reopened TB...
In your AV Firewall, is Thunderbird set up as an allowed program?
