I use TB. My ISP is GTT, & they don't support TB. 2 days ago my outgoing mail stopped working after the GTT group in Pune, India "made some changes".

Two days ago the same e-mail settings that have been working for a long time stopped working for my outgoing e-mail. My ISP is GTT, and they employ a group in Pune, India to take care of e-mail. The group has recently "made some changes" that have apparently caused my problem. That group DOES NOT support Thunderbird - they will ONLY support their own WebMail. Apparently the same settings that used to work no longer do - and the new settings suggested by the Pune group work fine with WebMail but NOT WITH TB. They say it is a TB problem (which they created).

Error Message: "Sending of password for user (** e-mail address) did not succeed. Mail server (**) responded: Invalid password or username" My understanding is that many GTT customers are having this problem. Thanks!

I could only find this: -- which I've just realised is the same info as sfhowes located :)

It says gtt logo at the top of page and this is a direct link to gtt.net. http://pop.community.co.uk/smtpauth.html Under Server Port Numbers, change "Outgoing mail (SMTP)" from 25 to 587 So for smtp outgoing server use port 587 , Security method: none and authentication: normal password.

I can't find much information on the gtt.net website, but it appears their previous outgoing server used non-secure connections on port 587. Maybe they now use secure connections, in which case the likely choice would be STARTTLS on port 587, instead of 'None'. Tools/Account Settings, Outgoing Server (SMTP) at the bottom of the left pane.

GTT e-mail tech support in Pune, India told me to continue to use non-secure connections and to change port numbers to 1025. Having now milled around smartly for a day or so while making no progress, I do not want to make too many more changes based upon "maybe". Hopefully, someone using GTT as an ISP and also using Thunderbird will have already worked through this swamp. Thanks for trying.

THANK YOU to both sfhowes and Toad-Hall. Both supplied the correct answer. Now, at the start of a new day, I made the suggested change and "cleaned up" some previous changes - and - Bingo! Success!
