Thunderbird won't recognize my email password anymore. I just started this week on both my Windows 10 PCs - odd, because I haven't changed anything I know of, certainly not on 2 PCs. But both tell me "Login to server imap.mail.att.net with username ______ failed. <Retry> <Enter New Password> <Cancel>" Re-entering my password or hitting <Retry> both fail and bring up the same message. My email account (with sbcglobal.net) still works on my iPad (thank god!) and I can still log in via a web browser, so it shouldn't be that I'm typing in the wrong password or an old one. I'm using Thunderbird . 60.6.1 My incoming server setting is imap.mail.att.net and my outgoing server setting is smtp.mail.att.net. I've checked my saved password in Thunderbird using <Options>,<Options>,<Security tab>,<Saved passwords> and it looks correct. Based on other community posts, I deleted and re-entered the password (after restarting T-bird) - no change there. This error really puzzles me - I've been using Thunderbird for many years, and I've had similar password errors pop up out of the blue every year or so. They usually fix themselves after a few days. Weird that it's happend on 2 different PCs at the same time. I wonder if there's some incompatibility with the sbcglobal server. Anyway, anyone have a suggestion? Thx

You may need to create a secure mail key for your AT&T account. https://www.att.com/esupport/article.html#!/email-support/KM1240308?gsi=cufurf0

If in doubt, check with AT&T.

Does it make any difference if you use a 'secure mail key' in place of the normal account password?

Thanks to both sfhowes and christ1. Yes, creating a secure mail key via the ATT.net web site did fix the problem. Interestingly, Thunderbird 'fixed itself' right before I implemented their suggestion - I opened Thunderbird on both my PCs to update to the new Secure Mail Key as my password, and before I did that, both Thunderbird accounts were working again. So apparently, the problem is related to what both sfhowes and christ1 said, but it must be a sporadic issue. From what I read on their links, AT&T/Yahoo implemented 'Open Authentication' (OAuth) some time ago and Thunderbird isn't compatible with that authentication procedure. (I won't pretend to understand the details of what OAuth is). Anyway, creating a secure mail key works - though since Thunderbird started working for me any, I'll hope it's not just a coincidental fix. Wondering if this issue should be more prominently featured in the forum - I did a search for 'Thunderbird OAuth' and 'Thunderbird Open Authentication', but didn't find anyone else mentioning this problem. Sorry to go on - too many words. Again thanks.

TB supports OAuth for certain providers, such as gmail and Yahoo. It works here, too, for AOL, which is not surprising given the connection between AOL mail and Yahoo mail. So, it may work with AT&T, but I haven't tried it, not being an AT&T customer.

It is my understanding that the OAuth2 functionality must be specifically coded for each provider offering it. I therefore doubt OAuth2 would work for AT&T at this time. This may change in a future release though.

I have waited two days for TB to fix this and have no idea what to do - new password set yesterday by method described and shown in password manager correctly but will still not let me into my account. It is with gmail and never had a previous password issue.
