Some of the messages I receive from my gmail account are blank. When I select the message to read it, the content is missing, and the message still remains "unread". This effects every other message, but only in the gmail account. I have some Comcast accounts which do not have this problem. Each account is filtered into a separate folder while downloading. I even created a new folder for my gmail account, but the problem still persists.

Sounds like you are using an imap account and the emails were not fully downloaded before being filtered to another folder.

Is the filtering moving email to another gmail imap folder or a folder in 'Local folders' mail account?

This might be being caused by your Anti-virus product causing a delay by scanning the file.

Start computer in 'Safe Mode with Networking'. Start Thunderbird Use in this mode for a while to see results of downloading and filtering.

Today I noticed the same thing was happening to some of my messages in my Comcast accounts as well. All of my accounts use the POP3 protocol to retrieve email.

I just booted into safe mode and was able to read all of the messages that I have previously downloaded.

So, what should I "fix" when I reboot in normal mode?

re :I just booted into safe mode and was able to read all of the messages that I have previously downloaded. This sounds like your Anti-Virus may be causing an issue. Do not scan Thunderbird files on startup. Make Thunderbird files exempt from scanning. Switch off scanning incoming emails. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Email_scanning_-_pros_and_cons

Note: Thunderbird does not by default allow remote content. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/remote-content-in-messages

Switching off scanning when downloading emails still means opening of attachments will still be scanned by Anti-virus.
