My old laptop's motherboard crashed. I was using Firefox. I have the old hard drive. How do I get the old Firefox Bookmarks, etc. to my new Firefox? Where/ what folder is this located? What do I cut/ paste?

Thank You

Firefox uses two locations for the Firefox profile folder. One location for your personal data (e.g. bookmarks) and another location for temporary files like the disk cache, so make sure to look in the correct location.

Location used for the main profile that keeps your personal data (Root Directory on about:profiles).

You can copy certain files with Firefox closed to the current profile folder to transfer or recover personal data. Note that best is to avoid copying a full profile folder.

  • bookmarks and history: places.sqlite
  • favicons: favicons.sqlite
  • bookmark backups: compressed .jsonlz4 JSON backups in the bookmarkbackups folder
  • cookies.sqlite for the Cookies
  • formhistory.sqlite for saved autocomplete Form Data
  • logins.json (encrypted logins;32+) and key4.db (decryption key;58+) for Passwords saved in the Password Manager
key3.db support ended in 73+; to use key3.db in 58-72, make sure to remove key4.db
  • cert9.db (58+) for (intermediate) certificates stored in the Certificate Manager
  • persdict.dat for words added to the spell checker dictionary
  • permissions.sqlite for Permissions and possibly content-prefs.sqlite for other website specific data (Site Preferences)
  • sessionstore.jsonlz4 for open tabs and pinned tabs (see also the sessionstore-backups folder)

Hello,

If I am understanding your title correctly, you are trying to move from Firefox to Chrome on your new computer. I am sorry to hear that you will be leaving us.

I think the easiest way to get them would be copying the entire profile over. This assumes you use Windows, if you don't, tell me and I'll change them to your operating system.

You will find the profiles in {drive}:\Users\{username}\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\

I do not know which profile you used, but the default profile (for non-beta versions) is the one with default-release in the name.

Copy this to your local install's profiles folder, which should be at %appdata%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles

Once you have done this, you may want to rename it so that you are not confused when you go to about:profiles in your running Firefox install and set this one as the default.

After this, you should have effectively the exact same Firefox. You can now, if need be, move over to Chrome. Firefox and this community will miss you.
