I synced my Google bookmarks onto my firefox browser and lost all my firefox bookmarks, can I get them back
I stupidly exported my Google browser bookmarks to Firefox when setting up on a new device and lost all my firefox bookmarks from all my other devices as a result. I am utterly horrified and freaking out - it's years of bookmarked articles that I'd even organised into folders! Is there any way to get them back?

Sorry to hear about this problem. Was Firefox already installed and running on your computer, or was it a new installation? I ask that because Firefox makes regular backups of your bookmarks in a local file. But if you restore one of those backups, that will nuke your imported Chrome bookmarks. So I suggest a 3-step plan:
(A) Export your current set of Firefox bookmarks for future reference or import. This article has the steps:
Export Firefox bookmarks to an HTML file to back up or transfer bookmarks
You can view that file in a browser tab to confirm it worked.
(B) Restore a bookmark backup from yesterday or whatever is available. You may need to do this on a device with an older installation. This will wipe out the Chrome bookmarks from Firefox. This article has the steps:
Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer
(C) Import the bookmarks.html file you created in Step 1. Unlike "Restore", "Import" will add the bookmarks to your current set rather than replacing them. This article has the steps:
Import Bookmarks from an HTML file
Success?
Hi Thanks so much for this and the very quick reply - massively appreciated! Unfortunately, my Firefox bookmarks were all on my phone and I don't think the steps you outlined to restore bookmarks works for the browser on the phone? Or have I missed something? (And just to clarify, in case it's not obvious, I am not very tech savvy at all!)
Mobile bookmarks appear in a different grouping when you Sync them to a desktop installation of Firefox. You can see them either in the Sidebar (Ctrl+B) or in the Library window (Ctrl+Shift+O as in "Organizer") as a separate Mobile bookmarks category. You can copy those to one of your desktop bookmark categories (Toolbar, Menu, Other) by selecting them, right-click > Copy, then clicking on the destination category and on the right side right-click > Paste.
Hi, thanks so much. Unfortunately, I seem to have messed up pretty spectacularly as the import of Google bookmarks seems to have overridden all my firefox bookmarks. Now even my bookmarks on my phone only show the ones from Google - which is not what I want at all as those were work-related bookmarks and the Firefox ones on my phone were personal. Is there a way to restore my Firefox bookmarks on my phone from 10 days ago at all?
Desktop bookmarks shouldn't override mobile bookmarks; they are maintained as separate categories.
Are you referring to bookmarks from a different desktop installation of Firefox that you could previously see on your mobile (in the desktop category), but those are now gone?
To be honest, I'm not sure - all I know is I made this one mistake of importing my Google bookmarks to Firefox on this new laptop and realised a a couple of days ago that all my bookmarks on my phone have been replaced with Google bookmarks as well as on the laptop. I have no idea how and why it happened and am super gutted about it. Desperate to try and get them back.
Did you ever use Firefox on a computer before, or only on a phone?
Is the new laptop the only device that isn't a mobile device or do you have/had other desktop devices ?
Hello, thank you so much for all of the help and sorry for the delay in coming back to you. Unfortunately, this advice is for recovering bookmarks on a laptop, rather than on my phone, which is where I had set them up and saved them all these years. Does anyone know how to recover Firefox bookmarks, from now two weeks ago, on my phone?
Android or iOS? There actually are separate forums for each. A moderator can move your question.
Hi there, it is android. Am I in the wrong section?! I didn't even realise. Thank you!
Hi
I am sorry, but unless you have a copy of your data in another copy of Firefox, it will not be possible to recover your bookmarks in Firefox for Android.
