What type of account is this (POP, IMAP)? Which is your email provider? You mention an iPad… does that mean this is an Apple computer running Mac OS?

Start Thunderbird in Troubleshoot Mode. The following article explains how to do that and why it can be useful to help identify the cause of a problem. Does that cause the problem to go away?
