Firefox will not let me open any web sites
Whenever I try to go from my home page to any other site, I get a "404 -Not found" message?

Make sure that you have File > Work offline menu not ticked. Check whether you are connected to the Internet (does IE open any websites?) Try it in safe mode once to troubleshoot the issue. See also Websites don't load - troubleshoot and fix error messages. Please reply how it helps or doesn't help to solve the problem.
Do you have test with other browsers,? it sounds like a network problem, try to reboot your router just in case.
