Firefox works and is default browser. but, internet explorer starts trying to come on,i know this because my clock stops, all processes slow,i start to shut things down, this warning appears:InternetExplorer is not responding. I stop Internet. Expl. and clock resets to normal and I continue on, until it does it again, and again.

I am not sure which version of Firefox I have, but I do keep it updated.

When this starts to happen, I hit ctrl, alt, delete thinking maybe something is processing that is slowing me down, and it does not show anything that I am not working on., however I try to put my cursor on the bottom row , like the clock icon or start button and it does the "twirlly" thing showing something is processing. I just keep messing with it till It shows me the warning... I mentioned above about internet explorer not responding. hope this helps.

I suspect you have some application, or maybe malware using IE. Normally if firefox is the default browser it would be used. It may of course be that something such as security software is set to use only IE and is running updates using IE.

You should consider doing a security scan on your system. You also need to figure out what is using IE this may help : http://technet.microsoft.com/en-gb/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx
