Do you want to remove the tab and see the page without a tab?
I don't know what the setting is in Firefox 4, but in Firefox 3:
Click Tools Menu, then Options, click Tabs, there is then an option: "Always show tab bar"
If that option is checked, you will always see the tab bar, even if there is only one tab open. If it is not checked, when you have closed all but one tab, the tab bar is not displayed but the web page in the "last" tab is displayed.
But, as I said, I've not used Firefox 4 (and from all the problems and changes in it, I may never use it).
NOW - as to closing the last tab without getting off the internet. What, exactly, would you like to happen if it were possible to close the last tab?
Doing so would be equivalent to terminating Firefox.
If you want the tab bar to only be displayed if there is more than one tab open, hunt down the option, like the one for Firefox 3 which I described above.
Try a Google search on: Firefox 4 "always show tab bar"
Perhaps you'll find a page which can tell you how to make the change to not display the tab bar when only one tab is open.

You can close tabs when you have many of them open, but if there is only one left, that is basically your browser window.
What you could do is open new windows instead of tabs (cmd+n on a Mac or right click). You would then have more control over which ones you would want to see, without actually having to close them.
Anyway, good luck.

Set the pref browser.tabs.closeWindowWithLastTab to false on the about:config page to prevent closing the last tab from closing the browser and make a close button appear if only one tab is open.
To open the about:config page, type about:config in the location (address) bar and press the "Enter" key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website.
If you see a warning then you can confirm that you want to access that page.
You can use the Filter bar at to top of the about:config page to locate a pref more easily.
