My e-mail messages no longer are shown what do I do
the prompts on the left side are there such as inbox, trash etc, but where the messages are supposed to be there is a green line. At&t told me to download internet explorer and through them I can get my e-mail just like it should be shown.

Windows XP comes with Internet Explorer, but there are upgrades available. If you don't have IE8, you might want to install it from Microsoft.com.
Meanwhile, I think AT&T mail works through Yahoo, is that correct?
