I found that the Chinese search engine Baidu www.baidu.com sets itself to the 1st search engine in Firefox 9.0.1. If I delete it from my search engine list using the manage search engines feature. Even if I only set say google as the first search engine during a session, Baidu resets itself to 1st position when I exit the browser.

Yesterday i completely uninstalled Firefox and all the history and then reinstalled it. Yesterday it was fine but today it is back! Sometimes I use Baidu to search for stuff in CHina, but I have not knowingly given it permission to do anything it just does it on its own. As I also run Zonelalarm Exreme and Spybot Search & Destroy it makes me nervous how it can bypass all these things and do what it wants. Also when you exit Firefox you get a message in the system tray that something tried but change my search settings and it was prevented from doing so, but in fact Baidu has changed my settings, as when you open Firefox the next time Baidu is back and No1 on the list.

Hi,

This may happen if you are using an application/software to connect to the internet in the first place. The application provided by the ISP may be doing this.

Hi, thanks for your reply. I am not using any software from my ISP, that I know of! Although the ADSL modem died recently in our house and they put in one from the phone company here. But they did not access my PC on which I have the problem. Interestingly I have a work laptop, also Win7 and it does not have this issue with Firefox. Thanks again.

Please check in Tools (Alt + T) > Add-ons > Extensions (on the left) for any add-on related to Baidu (can be an entirely different name) and Disable or Remove, if present and try resetting the search engines. You may also have to check (could have come with another software) in the Windows Control Panel > Programs and Features for any manually installed software that could have additionally installed Baidu. Please also see this

If the above doesn't work please try creating a new profile and check the default search engines. i.e. press Windows key + R, type and enter firefox -p -no-remote > Create Profile, after finishing the steps, select the newly created profile and Start Firefox.
