Unresponsive scripts still, even in safe mode!
Hello, I have been having the Unresponsive Script warnings for what is probably going on a year or so now, and it's getting increasingly difficult to use my computer. I'm not hugely technical with my computer, but I do know some, and have fixed many many problems before, even fixing my computer from a devestating malware virus a couple years ago myself, using only information from the internet. Which is why I find it so infuriating that I cannot find ANY answer to help me with this problem.
Here is some of what I get in a day or so:
Script: resource://gre/modules/XPCOMUtils.jsm:327 Script: chrome://mozapps/content/handling/dialog.js:217 Script: https://fbstatic-a.akamaihd.net/rsrc.php/v2/yq/r/ycIol0j_v6_.js:83 Script: https://fbstatic-a.akamaihd.net/rsrc.php/v2/yJ/r/Y_N-WoV7wHf.js:113 Script: resource://gre/components/nsBlocklistService.js:771 Script: resource://services-common/preferences.js:375 Script: https://fbstatic-a.akamaihd.net/rsrc.php/v2/yq/r/ycIol0j_v6_.js:61 Script: https://fbstatic-a.akamaihd.net/rsrc.php/v2/yg/r/EBXWafY_iCw.js:60 Script: chrome://global/content/bindings/text.xml:39 Script: resource://gre/components/nsBlocklistService.js:771 Script: https://www.google.ca/xjs/_/js/k=xjs.s.en_US.l3EGKs4A4V8.O/m=c,sb,cr,cdos,jp,tbui,mb,cfm,str,kp,lu,m,tnv,hv,lc,ob,prw,r,sf,sfa,tbpr,hsm,pcc,csi/am=wA/rt=j/d=1/sv=1/rs=AItRSTPykpoFa5KBzk1U6LafAMpzPobqCw:900 Script: https://fbstatic-a.akamaihd.net/rsrc.php/v2/yN/r/yWtjzXDcUXL.js:37 Script: resource://gre/modules/XPCOMUtils.jsm:327 Script: resource://gre/modules/DownloadLastDir.jsm:80 Script: https://fbstatic-a.akamaihd.net/rsrc.php/v2/yN/r/yWtjzXDcUXL.js:34 Script: https://fbstatic-a.akamaihd.net/rsrc.php/v2/yN/r/yWtjzXDcUXL.js:83
Most of the time it's Facebook that's giving me a problem, but it does it on other websites too. Without going into tons and tons of detail, I have basically tried EVERYTHING I can do on my own. I have searched this problem for months and months, and always come back with nothing helpful.
I tried FF safemode in the past day or two, and it occurs there as well. I have tried everything from changing dom.max_script_run_time default, I've tried Greasemonkey, I've disabled, enabled, and disabled every script I had, I've reset FF, I've turned off the hardware accelerator, etc, etc, etc. I can't even tell you everything else that I've done because it's been such an ongoing problem. I am to the point now, that I am not going on the computer for days (even though I have things to do) because I don't want to be on it for 6 hours at a time. I want to check facebook every day for about 30 minutes, to read my mail, and chat with my friends, but it turns out to be a lesson in frustration, and I've learned to play classical music when on my computer because it calms me down. Waiting 3 hours just to check your facebook is increadibly inconvenient; something that I did at the library in 10 minutes. It doesn't just happen on FB, but that's the MAIN culprit. My Shockwave Flash also crashes ALL the time, and I've updated it several times. I've tried everything, and I just can't win. If this continues, I'm giving up on FF. I love FF. I want to use it. It used to be the best thing ever. But now, I can't do it anymore.. my patience is so stretched, that I am just done.
I am OBVIOUSLY not the only one with this problem, as there seems to be a million questions on the internet about this problem, and NOBODY can give a straight answer.
WHY?? FF you can do better than this! You MUST solve this problem! It's affecting so many people out there!
Sincerely, M
Ps.. I have a PC, Windows XPPro, FF22.0, and I had YesScript 1.9, Personas Plus 1.7,2.1, and Status-4-Evar 2013.02.16.23 (But all have been removed with the FF Reset) and none of them were the culprit because I disabled them a while ago, and still had the problem day after day.
Thank you for your help :)

I would suggest the following two steps (appologies if already done)
1. Check your plug-ins
Have you checked your plug-ins lately? Please check if all your plugins are up-to-date. To do this, go to the Mozilla Plugin Check site.
Once you're there, the site will check if all your plugins have the latest versions. If you see plugins in the list that have a yellow Update button or a red Update now button, please update these immediately.
2. Run Firefox in Safe Mode
Given the extensions you have you should try the Safe Mode. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)
- You can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
- Or open the Help menu and click on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item while Firefox is running.
Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"
If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article for that.
To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.
When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.
Hello Smo,
Thank you for your reply, but yes I have already done those things. The problem remains after a year or so, and the problem still remains in safe-mode.
When updating my plug-ins, I had a lot of problems on them not updating, especially FLASH, but I finally got it to work, and it is now updated. It is STILL giving me unresponsive script messages.
This is what came up in safe-mode over a couple hours:
Script: https://fbstatic-a.akamaihd.net/rsrc.php/v2/yL/r/z-O1W5wbZf4.js:60 Script: chrome://global/content/bindings/text.xml:39 Script: https://fbstatic-a.akamaihd.net/rsrc.php/v2/yu/r/PHN_xWtDFVJ.js:42 Script: https://fbstatic-a.akamaihd.net/rsrc.php/v2/yF/r/pmYy9aLa5q_.js:12
Today I put the AdBlockPlus add-on on my FF and still the problem remains. This is what came up with AdBlockPlus installed:
Script: chrome://global/content/bindings/text.xml:39 Script: resource://gre/modules/DownloadLastDir.jsm:80 Script: https://fbstatic-a.akamaihd.net/rsrc.php/v2/yu/r/PHN_xWtDFVJ.js:83 Script: chrome://global/content/bindings/text.xml:39 (when i click on pic on FB) Script: https://fbstatic-a.akamaihd.net/rsrc.php/v2/yF/r/pmYy9aLa5q_.js:58 (when picture loads) Script: https://fbstatic-a.akamaihd.net/rsrc.php/v2/yu/r/PHN_xWtDFVJ.js:37 Script: https://fbstatic-a.akamaihd.net/rsrc.php/v2/yF/r/pmYy9aLa5q_.js:23 Script: https://fbstatic-a.akamaihd.net/rsrc.php/v2/yF/r/pmYy9aLa5q_.js:12 Script: file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/Monarch/Application%20Data/Mozilla/Firefox/Profiles/zfsuu704.default-1373326061805/gm_scripts/Simple_Flash_Blocker/75585.user.js:21
It's just a neverending nightmare. I have to use TaskManager to kill Firefox several times a day. Mostly with Facebook. It's ridiculous.
I am now using Chrome. We'll see how that goes.
Again, thank you for your help.

Thank you thank you thank you for making this post.
I have been searching like every week for users with the same problem, but it was just me until now.
I can confirm that this happens only on Facebook, with any recent version of Firefox (I am currently using 22.0). This is on Windows 7.
FWIW it always complains about the unresponsive script being from nsBlocklistService.js:771 for me, and akamai seems to be always the domain with the problem.
Isn't it insane that no one can solve this issue?!
I still get crashes in Chrome, but it's maybe once or twice a day.. way better than FF, which would do it constantly for hours! It's a shame. I miss and love FF, but I can't do anything with it anymore. If they can't fix the problem, then many more people will leave. :(

Been having the same problem for about a week now. Using FF 22.0 and Windows 7. Only happens in ONE of my FB profiles. Have tried EVERYTHING, including disabling all add ons, clearing the cache/cookies. I've also deleted all FB apps. This would appear to be either a Facebook or https://fbstatic-a.akamaihd.net issue, and it happens only when trying to load the news feed, not the profile page. Clearing the cookies will work for awhile, but then the newsfeed will stop auto-updating, and when you try to reload the page, it freezes and pops up the "unresponsive script" error. I should also note I don't believe this is a FF issue as this problem will duplicate in Chrome. Hopefully this bug will resolve itself or someone over at FB will fix it!!!! Frustrating to say the least!!
Looks like certain sites bloat the user's profile with prefetched information and God knows what else ... Have you tried clearing the cache in such moments? See How to clear the Firefox cache
yes, all the time, but with this particular issue it hasn't helped. Thanks for the suggestion, tho!
Reload web page(s) and bypass the cache to refresh possibly outdated or corrupted files.
- Hold down the Shift key and left-click the Reload button
- Press "Ctrl + F5" or press "Ctrl + Shift + R" (Windows,Linux)
- Press "Command + Shift + R" (Mac)
For Windows 7 users, sites that use Flash may cause scripts to stall out due to a recent Windows update. The most effective workaround is to disable the Flash Player plugin's "protected mode". My experience with that is in this thread: Flash hangs Firefox (eventually get script continue/stop dialog).
A very similar set of symptoms was tracked back to Avast Script Shield in this thread: After all the links you gave me FF still has scriptproblems in FB. (Version unknown.)
I don't have Avast Script Shield (or any other script add-ons) and I am thinking it may have to do with the Flash add-on. Will try reverting to an older version of Flash and see if it helps. Disabling protected mode did nothing. But removing the FB cookies and then disabling the Flash add-on works...for now. Thanks for your suggestions!
@jscher2000 It's definitely not a recent windows update because I havent done any in about a year. Avast Script Shield is worth checking out modulo candygirl777's comment. I'll keep y'all posted.
@jscher2000 not avast script shield either; it's not running. I'll try candygirl777's suggestion.
Try any or all of the following:
- Install Firefox 22.0 because 24 still has bugs and security issues
- Run an full anti-virus scan
- Scan for bad registries (I recommend using CCleaner)
- Defragment your computer's hard drive
- Delete all temporary memory and cache
- Remove unwanted/unused programs
- Remove unused Firefox extensions
- Update all Firefox plugins
smo,
Thank you so much all of your suggestions together worked!
NONE of the above has worked for me. Currently running FF 23 and Windows 7. What I'm experiencing strictly happens with the Facebook news feed, and may be completely independent of Firefox as others have reported this problem in other browsers...(https://www.facebook.com/help/community/question/?id=10151551364085966&referer=answered_notification&ref=notif¬if_t=answers_answered)
What seems to have worked for me is upgrading avast to the latest version (8.something). I had 7.something and even though the script shield was off the issue was happening. Upgrading avast seems to have fixed this for me.
Thanks chengiz!
I am gonna keep you input in my back pocket as ammo!!! Yesterday the script errors came back with a vengeance! As others have already said here it was happening with Facebook I use it to communicate with my work at home team and networking. So it was super important to tackle this issue! I also cleaned up my add-on (in safe mode really clean) and ran Firefox through a couple of Malware programs.
All day today I have to report NOT one script error everything is running in normal in normal mode!!!!!
I had similar problems. Firefox v23 or v11 or v3.8 where unresponsive and displayed after 10 minutes problems with script. Tried everything, removed flash, reinstall old versions, cleaned registry, did virus scan. Nothing helped. Safe mode did not help either. Disabled all plug ins and add-on's. Tried chrome but that was also slow and unresponsive. So finally concluded it should be something in my Windows XP sp2. Other windows programs where running fine
Finally reinstalled SP2 (service pack 2) of Windows and problem was solved!!
