Bookmark library: each use causes FF to freeze for up to 90 seconds and sometimes causes FF to crash.

I've tried disabling all add-ons, plug-ins etc but to no avail. Each time I select 'organize bookmarks' and type in the 'search bookmark' dialog the whole of FF freezes for a min. of 30 secs further searches have the same effect and frequently I have to ctrl/alt/del to bring up the task manager to shut FF down.
