If you happen to have Malwarebytes 3 installed, uninstall it and retry.

The uninstalling of ver 3.2.2 of Malwarebytes enabled the Thunderbird to restart and work again. The question is can I now reinstall Mawarebytes and continue using it or is this a long term bug. Thank you once again for the solution
Modified
I found this solution based on this question, but the Malwarebytes forum also reports a number of crashes in Firefox, Opera and Pandora when using the 3.2.2.2018 version (see here).
Their solution/workaround would be to disable its Self Protection component under Settings -> Protection for now, so you can try that after reinstalling Malwarebytes, and keep an eye on the forum thread and products updates.
