This article answers questions for new users of Thunderbird for Android version 8.

Thunderbird for Android is constantly evolving. Throughout the next year, we will deliver many improvements to existing Thunderbird features and introduce brand new ones. Upgrade to Thunderbird for Android version 8 and experience the future of Thunderbird on mobile!

What is happening with K-9?

We will continue to maintain Thunderbird and K-9 Mail in paralell for the time being. Quite a few people love K-9 Mail and have asked us to keep the robot dog around. We believe it should be relatively little effort to maintain two apps.

There are a few features that might make more sense for a Thunderbird than a K-9 Mail, where we might enable them in the one but not in the other application. If you'd like to stay up to date with the latest features we encourage you to try Thunderbird Beta for Testers, or make Thunderbird for Android your primary email application.

If I am on Thunderbird for Android beta, what happens when Thunderbird for Android is released?

Nothing will happen, because you will continue to be on the Thunderbird for Android beta channel.

But you can switch to the release channel and not lose your settings by following the instructions at: Import settings and data into Thunderbird for Android to export your Thunderbird for Android beta settings to Thunderbird for Android release.

What about F-droid? I don't see Thunderbird or K-9 Mail 8.0 there.

Builds have been submitted to F-droid and will be available in early November. You will be able to see them at https://f-droid.org/packages/net.thunderbird.android and https://f-droid.org/packages/net.thunderbird.android.beta when they become available.

Likewise, K-9 Mail 8.0 will become available in F-droid in early November.

I'm not able to use the import from K-9 Mail or Thunderbird Desktop. What am I missing?

The import requires using a supported version. Please make sure you are using Thunderbird Desktop 128.4.0 or later, and K-9 Mail 8.0 or later. More information is at Import settings and data into Thunderbird for Android.

I'm having trouble identifying my email accounts in the new design

We've updated the folder drawer design to be compliant with the Material 3 interface guidelines. As part of this change, unfortunately a few features got lost. The current letter combinations are the first two letters of the domain of your email address.

In an update not too long in the future, we intend to return the ability to set an account image, and provide further customization opportunities. We would also like to stabilize the ordering so the active account is not moved to the top.

For the moment, the only workaround we can offer is to customize the accent colors and memorize them.

I'm not getting notifications for my email or they are not arriving unless I check manually

You might have acceidentally skipped over this in the first time user experience. Make sure you grant notification permissions to the application in your Android settings.

We've also changed the way the former "folder classes" work. If you are not getting notifications for the folders that are important to you, double check that you have either sync or push enabled in the folder settings for that folder.

What is happening with Exchange Support?

Thunderbird for Android currently supports the following protocols: IMAP, POP and SMTP. Support for Exchange is being planned for future releases. Please keep an eye on our blog for news.

What is happening with Thunderbird Sync?

  • We are building our own sync storage server and it is taking some time to set it up and test. We will let you know when it is available for public pre-release testing.
  • In the meantime, you can reuse your email account settings from Thunderbird Desktop via a QR code or import your settings from K-9 or from a file. Please see Import settings and data into Thunderbird for Android for full details.

What about calendering?

  • Thunderbird for Android does not have calendar functionality. It is not on the near term roadmap, but will be evaluated in the future. For now, users are encouraged to use one of the many calendar apps available for Android, and post the features they would most want on Connect.
