Did you disable setting a history in you privacy Settings?

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/settings-privacy-browsing-history-do-not-track

If you are set to "Use custom settings for history" ensure that "Remember my browsing and download history" is ticked.

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database file (bookmarks, history) in the Firefox profile folder.
