I am about to load T/bird but read no ongoing dev support. Is this true?

I currently have two web based email accounts, and i'm looking for a simple but reliable email client to bring control closer to home. I have used Firefox for years and like to support Mozilla when possible, thus I have been checking T/bird out on the net I found mixed reviews, although most seem mainly positive. One negative review indicated that Mosilla were no longer going to support further development of T/bird. If someone could confirm this I would appreciate it, along with any additional comments as to whether this would pose a problem for me as a newbie. If this is the case, do they believe it is perfected, or are they planning the introduction of a brand new product? Many thanks in advance for any assistance.

Basically Mozilla went their own way a number of years ago. Thunderbird is no longer a part of the Mozilla free and open web mantra.

Thunderbird has been a community project for the past three major releases and development continues with volunteer developers.

In fact usage has actually increased since Mozilla announced they would not be developing Thunderbird further. Much to the pleasure of the Thunderbird council.

The future looks far stronger than it did two years ago. Although donations to support the product into the future are going to be an ongoing issue. Blending the begging for money and the culture of free as in beer is going to be a challenge. But in the long term the project will require funding. It can not all be done on volunteer efforts. But the future looks bright from where I am sitting as the project is being led by a dedicated group.
