Thunderbird worked great about 10 days ago. Now, when I try to compress Inbox, it freezes win7. When I tried to move some messages to another folder it froze win7 again. I found 2 old e-mails from 2012 that showed to have an attachment. When I try to move or delete these 2 messages, I get a message "loading" and then thunderbird 38.5.1 (and update to 38.6) and win7 freezes

It looks my disk has a problem at the location of those 2 files. They therefore could neither be read nor deleted.

Thunderbird "Repair" deleted all e-mails after those broken ones.

Microsoft "chkdsk" got everything on that disk out of synchonization and the computer stopped booting.

I am now installing my Acronis backup on another/newer computer.

Thanks for your help.

all of that sounds like an anti virus program that has got out of control.

Have you tried rebooting?
