partial url autocomplete not working anymore

more options

when typing a url, firefox correctly pulls autocomplete results from my bookmarks.

However now it only does this if I start typing all the address!

If I have a bookmark: www.example.com/cats

If I type: "www.ex"

ff pulls the url. which is correct.

Until approx 1 month ago, if I typed "cats" into the address bar, ff would display my bookmark as the first result. Now it doesn't anymore.

Restared ff in safe mode. Restored to factory defaults and deleted all the extensions. Deleted places.sqlite.

Nothing is fixing this!

If you deleted places.sqlite, that would have removed your history. What now appears at the top of the list before your bookmark matches?

As a separate issue than the suggested bookmark and history matches, you normally will see an informational line (e.g., Visit... or Search...) that explains what will happen if you were to press Enter right now. You still can arrow down to the best match. Or you can use an add-on or custom style rule to hide that line. Hiding that line will not change needing to press the down arrow key to click the desired match.
