Importing a calendar - do I now have two?

In my calendar-data\backup folder I have over 40 .ics files (spread over five calendars) They vary from calBackupData_1481772182158_edit.ics to others ending with thing like: ….day.ics, ….day-2.ics,….day-3.ics,…,...edit.ics, ...intial.ics.

Now when I started on trying to backup and tidy the calendar files, there were perhaps five or ten of these files. Is there a reason why they’ve multiplied? Are they breeding?

Earlier I needed to restore some backups, which had been exported as .ics.

When I clicked on the calendar and pressed delete, I was asked “Do you want to unsubscribe from the calendar “personal”?, followed by “unsubscribe” or “cancel” I assumed (dangerous I know) that the unsubscribe option deleted it from the system? Then I imported the backup I wanted. It’s making me wonder now if it was deleted or just ignored? Since having imported the backup, I notice when the calendar reminder pops-up, it “pings” twice now, whereas before it was only once. Something else I’ve noticed is that when I pick an event entry to edit, if I click Category, a dropdownlist appears. I remember adding an entry to that list called “Payments”. However, only some of the events have that customised Payments item in the list.

Is there perhaps something I should do to make sure when “unsubscribing” that the calendar is deleted, before importing another one? Have they merged, or duplicated?

Ics files are not especially useful for backing up. They are good for importing a new calendar. Why not just backup the whole calendar-data folder and forget all this import/export stuff?

I've used the .ics option for years, because it's only in the past week I've found out about delving into the calendar folders. That doesn't answer my question though.
