What do you want to happen?
How do you intend to use TB to "encrypt your email"? Is everyone you correspond with on board with this? Have you all decided to use S/MIME or GPG?
If you are concerned about protecting your data, it is assumed you will be using security measures that protect your computer and/or your data store, such as User Accounts, hard disk encryption etc. Do this and your email store is also covered.
Thunderbird, in common with many email clients, does not store your messages in a secure form. Even if Thunderbird is closed, your mailbox files can, by and large, be read using pretty much any text editor.

If you open Word you can read your documents. Thunderbird is no different. They build security logins into operating systems for a reason. Use that.
