Firefox consistently monopolises 99% CPU -- even after fixes suggested on Support pages (deactivate add-ons, run in Safemode, reinstall) (XP, 2GB)
Firefox consistently monopolises 99% of memory -- except, inexplicably, whenever I am on a Mozilla Support page. (I usually have three or four tabs open: hotmail, work email, Linkedin and theguardian newspaper. When I am 'on' any of these pages, Firefox usage is 94-99%; if I open a Mozill Support page, when I am 'on' this page, usage drops below 10%.)
I have tried all of the solutions suggested on the Support site (disabled all add-ons, run in Safe mode, re-installed latest version) but all to no avail. When left unattended for an hour or more, Firefox crashes, but is then "unable" to send a report. I use Windows XP.

Hello,
Windows XP is not supported by Microsoft(Operating System Developer). Do you happen to have a problem right on your computer?
It is possible that you have an old computer or computer filled with other things. Have you checked your computer with an antivirus program?

Typed in the URL bar - about:crashes & hit Enter - see if there are any unsubmitted Crash Reports there. If so click on the latest few Reports and see if they will get submitted manually.
If they do get submitted, paste the new Crash Report ID's in this forum thread and someone can review the reports to see if they can determine what might be causing those crashes.
To David Walczysko Thank you. I have no other problems with my (yes, it is an old) computer -- only when I am running Firefox. My Norton Security is kept fully up-to-date.
To the-edmeister The crash reports IDs are: 7cd77ee9-73f2-4670-947d-b1cbc0171218 05fcbc10-33f4-49b2-90f4-a99a70171218 407cf16e-ef22-454d-ab7c-e3d3a0171218 89b110f9-a901-494d-bdd1-95c040171218 3f634ff1-fd23-4832-b915-276d70171218 40399096-8eed-48b8-90b3-5c23e0171218

Submit as directed in this https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-crashes-asking-support Need to get them so are a URL on this end. Need only the last 3.
Please let us know if this solved your issue or if need further assistance.
When I follow the instructions on "Firefox crashes - asking for support":
"Right-click on the latest crash under Report ID and choose Open Link in New Tab. A new tab will open with the crash-stats.mozilla.com page. When the report is finished processing, close the report tab."
I receive a message "About Throttling"
You're seeing this page because the crash report you selected was held back from submission. For statistical purposes, we don't need every crash report and sometimes we decline the submission of a crash report as a form of throttling. If you'd like to see your crash report, type about:crashes into your location bar and your report will be automatically submitted to our server where we'll give it priority processing.
Maybe this will work (copied from address bar): https://crash-stats.mozilla.com/report/index/cbcda790-896b-4198-ae04-87d680171218 https://crash-stats.mozilla.com/report/index/459a5fdb-8499-42a5-bd04-c439c0171218 https://crash-stats.mozilla.com/report/index/e89ef01a-6400-4d78-8c0a-b1d590171218
With very sincere thanks,
If it adds any insight to the nature or source of the problem, in my original description, I neglected to mention that, for the past couple of weeks, when trying to print a page from the 'net, I am unable to adjust the scale in Print Preview. Regardless of the percentage I select, it is 'stuck' at (what appears to be) 125%.
uninstall Firefox. Then Delete the Mozilla Firefox Folders in C:\Program Files and C:\Program Files(x86) Then restart system. Then run Windows Disk Cleanup. Then run it again and click the button that says Cleanup System Files. Note: your Firefox Profile is saved. But you should make a back up before you do : https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/back-and-restore-information-firefox-profiles

For your : Intel(R) 82945G Express Chipset Family driverDate: 1-13-2007 There is Xp Drivers from 2008 here : https://downloadcenter.intel.com/product/81526/Graphics-Drivers-for-Intel-82945G-Express-Chipset You could possibly get away with installing Vista Drivers in Compatibility mode but that is up to you.
You can also open a Dos Command Prompt As Administrator (Right Click Run as Administrator) and type SFC /Scannow = SFC<space>/SCANNOW to fix registry errors.

Pkshadow,
Thank you very much.
While this has not entirely resolved the problem, it has helped.
After following your advice to uninstall and re-install Firefox, CPU usage now vacillates intermittently from 50-something% to 99% (although inexplicably, while it drops to almost nothing whenever I am on a Mozilla page, as soon as I am on any other page, it bounces back to 90-something%).
When attempting to print a page from the 'net, the Print Preview function is, however, still a problem. Regardless of the scale selected, I still get the requested page at (what appears to be) 125%.
I downloaded the recommended replacement graphic driver, but (forgive me), I don't know: i) into which folder to copy it (C:\Windows\system32 contains many sub-folders; in which one should I put it?), or ii) how to tell the computer to update the existing driver to use the new one.
With very sincere thanks,
Rutherford2017
The driver is a installer package, double click it. It will know what to do.
Ignore, that was for version 57.

Think I finely got it. You will have to check first. Check to : See if Multi-Processor Support is turned on. Multi-processor support feature may be disabled depending on your setup (it was for me) - you can check this by launching Firefox, then enter in "about:support" in the address bar; near the bottom, you should see a heading that says: "Multiprocess Windows", then look at the value next to it. If it says "0/1", then that means it's disabled. 0/2 and higher = on unless says it is off.
Then check the Task Manager and see how many instances of Firefox is running and what the memory numbers are like.
If need to can turn off multiprocessor : You can try to modify multi-process settings to see if this has effect. You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I accept the risk!" to continue.
set dom.ipc.processCount to 1 if it is currently set to a higher value (4) disable multi-process windows in Firefox
You can disable multi-process windows in Firefox by setting these prefs to false on the about:config page.
browser.tabs.remote.autostart = false browser.tabs.remote.autostart.2 = false
http://kb.mozillazine.org/about:config Also can reverse everything this tells you to enable it. http://www.ghacks.net/2016/07/22/multi-process-firefox/

Do you use Pocket 1.0.5 (firefox@getpocket.com See solution here : https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1184863#answer-1028648 to turn it off Mikll post.
Thank you.
Multiprocess Windows is set at "0/1 (Windows XP)"
Only one version of Firefox is running and which, at the moment, is using between 6-25% of CPU. (Although since re-installing Firefox, it has been vacillating between 50-something% and 99%.)
Any thoughts about the problem with the Print Preview function? (When attempting to print a page from the 'net, regardless of the scale selected, the requested page appears to be 125%.) See attached screenshot.
With very sincere thanks,
I assume that I do not use Pocket 1.0.5 -- as I don't even know what this is.
Suggest you turn pocket off as per the solution. It could be the issue, never know and since not using it.....poof...and is taking up ram.
Only things I have on printing are these : https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/fix-printing-problems-firefox http://kb.mozillazine.org/Problems_printing_web_pages
Suggest go manufactures website and look up make and model # and see if can find newer drivers. I imagine you installed from disk or cd when got the printer. Those drivers where out of date before you bought it.
May want to increase Virtual Ram
You may want to try this: Open the System Folder then Click on left side Advanced System Settings which opens System Properties click the Advanced Tab then click Performance button Settings then the Advanced Tab then Click the Change under Virtual Memory click Custom Size and Change Size to where it says Recommended Size
- Recommended size is greyed out, you enter same numbers into Max and Min+++
then Click Set and then Click Apply then please Re-boot.
System - -> Advanced System Settings --> System Properties - -> Advanced Tab - -> Change Virtual Memory - -> Custom Size - -> ENTER Recommended Size - -> Set - -> Apply-- > Reboot
Thank you very much.
I have turned off pocket.
Print Preview is now responding to changes in scale.
I will advise if the problems continue or reappear.
With my very, very sincere thanks for all of your assistance,
Rutherford2017
I spoke too soon.
CPU usage is now back up to 99%.
Sigh.
Please know that I am very grateful for all of the assistance and suggestions you have offered -- all of which I have followed -- but, as per my message on 19 December (above), Firefox usage of my CPU is still at 97-99%.
If you are still crashing, please post your newest crash IDs.
Your system only has 2GB memory? - Even so, you may want to enable 3GB switch http://dwf.blogs.com/beyond_the_paper/2009/04/enabling-3gb-switch-on-windows-vista.html
Have you tried a new profile? - https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profile-manager-create-and-remove-firefox-profiles
