When I start thunderbird I get this response "failed to connect to server inbound att.net" WHY

I have to keep restarting Mozilla Thunderbird several times before it will connect and send my incoming mail. This problem started a few weeks ago and happens most every morning when I log on and start Thunderbird. Thanks for you help
