Disable annoying update reminders
Is there any way to temporarily disable Firefox (and Thunderbird) update reminders? Mozilla seems to be updating its software so often that I'm getting too many reminders and it's interfering with my work flow. I understand the need to keep software up to date as often as possible but this has now got ridiculous, and I am on the verge of changing my default browser from Firefox to Safari, Chrome or Vivaldi. Please stop forcing every little tiny update onto your users!
Or is there some sneaky little way I haven't noticed under Preferences which already does enable me to do this?

You are using an old version of Firefox. That is why you are getting update reminders.
How do you completely turn off update checks in Firefox v64? You can use a policies.json file to disable updates for all users. https://github.com/mozilla/policy-templates/blob/master/README.md or https://winaero.com/blog/disable-updates-firefox-63-above/
You can use a policies.json file in the distribution folder in the Firefox installation folder instead as also listed in the article, so no need to use GPO keys in the Windows Registry. • https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/customizing-firefox-using-policiesjson
Thanks for your reply, Fred, but it's not quite as simple as that. I have two Macs with different operating systems, and have the same problem on both systems - the update reminders come way too often. One computer is running OS 10.10.5 (Yosemite), which enables me to work with a colleague who has older third party software. This has an older version of Firefox (78.4.1esr). My other Mac runs OS 10.15.7 (Catalina) and has the latest version of Firefox (83.0). I have too many reminders on both systems.
Will look into the policies.json file, but it would be much more practical to be able to switch update reminders on and off in Preferences. I'm sure I'm not the only user who would find this a lot more practical. Firefox and Thunderbird have been my main browser and email client for years now, but I am seriously thinking of switching to other software...
But thanks anyway for taking the time to reply!
Originally, Firefox options had a setting to not check for updates. But when the Quantum came out, that option was removed.
indeed, it's sooo annoying...
cliff.douse asked how to pause or DISABLE the Fire Fox New Version reminder. As I understood FredMcD's reply he provided a means to DISABLE updates not STOP the reminders ONLY.
I don't need to be reminded there's a new (& according to the developers) a 'more secure, easy to use, and new features version.
If I encounter stability or security issues which cannot be resolved, I will HAVE TO download & install a more recent and more secure version.
As long as Ver 72.0.2 works, I am familiar with it (I'm not young) AND it works. Why learn something new if there's no problem(s) / reason! This version is STABLE, seems secure, and I've learned-become familiar with it.
As cliff.douse pointed out REPEATED intrusions of - by the drop down box break concentration, sometimes block important data, etc. How do I ONLY disable the drop down reminder?
