Firefox 78.15.0esr Mac OS 11.6

Strange behavior (imho): in gmail, in an email, if I click on a link, it opens in a new tab behind the current one. In any other website, clicking a link brings it up in the current tab.

In any other website, command-click opens a link in a new tab behind the current. In gmail, in an email, command-click on a link does nothing.

In both gmail and other websites, command-shift-click opens a link in a new tab and makes it the active tab.

I have years of muscle memory of command-click to open links in gmail - that's how every other browser I've used works. Is there a setting to make FF behave consistently, both with how it handles other websites and with how every other browser works?

I have restarted FF, natch, and I tried setting browser.tabs.loadDivertedInBackground from FALSE to TRUE but see no difference.
