I have a folder of YouTube links that I've saved for periodic review. Usually all I used to do was click on a link which would then take me to the desired link, but now, with my most recent Firefox update, when I click on a link I get a totally different link. For example:

When I click on : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5h2Q1YUm-Vg

I get redirected to: https://www.youtube.com/supported_browsers?next_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3D5h2Q1YUm-Vg

Or when I click on : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=myy7ldfgTnQ I get redirected to: https://www.youtube.com/supported_browsers?next_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3Dmyy7ldfgTnQ

Please help resolve this irritating mystery! Thank you

I assume no one else is getting redirected or we'd have a flood of threads on this.

Did you try clearing the "Cached web content"? Redirects are stored in the cache so we want to make sure we're not just repeating history over and over, and actually getting a fresh response from the network.

Do you get a message like this:

Your browser is up to date You can use YouTube's latest features!

Or do you get a message that you need to update or change browsers?

Hello! I get : Your browser is up to date You can use YouTube's latest features!

That makes it very mysterious. If everything is okay, why would YouTube divert you to the browser checking page?

Are you opening the links from YouTube itself? Or does the problem occur with links in a message from someone sharing the video, or from some search results on Google or another site?

If you use extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) that can block content (Adblock Plus, NoScript, DuckDuckGo PE, Disconnect, Ghostery, Privacy Badger, uBlock Origin) always make sure such extensions do not block content.

Firefox shows a purple shield instead of a gray shield at the left end of the location/address bar in case Enhanced Tracking Protection is blocking content. You can click shield icon for more detail and possibly disable the protection. You can check the Web Console for relevant-looking messages about blocked content.

You can try these steps in case of issues with webpages:

You can reload webpage(s) and bypass the cache to refresh possibly outdated or corrupted files.

  • hold down the Shift key and left-click the Reload button
  • press "Ctrl + F5" or press "Ctrl + Shift + R" (Windows,Linux)
  • press "Command + Shift + R" (Mac)

Clear the Cache and remove the Cookies for websites that cause problems via the "3-bar" Firefox menu button (Settings).

"Remove the Cookies" for websites that cause problems:

  • Settings -> Privacy & Security
    Cookies and Site Data: "Manage Data"

"Clear the Cache":

  • Settings -> Privacy & Security
    Cookies and Site Data -> Clear Data -> [X] Cached Web Content -> Clear

Start Firefox in Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration or userChrome.css is causing the problem.

  • switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Themes
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Troubleshoot Mode start window

Hi there, I don't have any extensions that I know of. I'm thinking this has to do with the latest firefox update, because the problem didn't happen before  :-(

Also I have provided the links in my original post and the subsequent reponse I get from youtube. You can click on both links and see the exact response.

I tried the same issue with google chrome and the problem persists so it must not be a firefox issue. Will have to look into you tube and see what is causing it. Thanks for your help!

You can check the connection settings.

  • Settings -> General -> Network: Connection -> Settings

If you do not need to use a proxy to connect to internet then try to select "No Proxy" if "Use the system proxy settings" or one of the others do not work properly.

See "Firefox connection settings":

Start Firefox in Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration or userChrome.css is causing the problem.

  • switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Themes
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Troubleshoot Mode start window

Boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support to see if that has effect.
