Used to import the .json-files fromthe external HD after upgrading firefox and win7.

To my surprise it is not possible in the last version of FF to import.json-files. How can I transfer the .json-file into HTML-files?

By the way strange the change is not mentioned before installing the new FF.

Waiting,

i found a simple solution. just clilck rename file (of your bookmark backup file) and add .json to the end of you named file. and oila! you have your bookmarks. :D btw, better make a copy of your backup just in case something goes wrong.

"Bookmarks > Organize Bookmarks" has been renamed to "Show All Bookmarks" in Firefox 4 and later.

I haven't come across a "converter" for JSON to HTML for Bookmarks.

You need to restore a JSON bookmarks backup file; HTML bookmarks files are exported and imported.

That hasn't been changed since Firefox 3, when the new bookmarks system came out,

At first thank you very much for both the replies. However, it did not work. I have saved the old .json files to an external HD.

When I want to import the .json-files, the question is import a HTML-file. So the saved .json file is not shown on the computer. After a few things I did I was able to import a .json fil, but the answer was that the file was not accepted. Also I tried according to the article above to choose the repair option instead of the import of a HTML-file. That did not work also. I do the importing of .json-files already for a long time, because i test software and this is one of the things i do. In the new FF this does not work until now.

You had a good link make sure you know the difference between export/import and backup/restore. You must restore a Jason backup.

BTW, a restore is a complete replacement of your bookmarks.

Did you use this?

  • Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks > Import & Backup > Restore > Choose File

Dear Cor-el,

Yes I was usinf the solution as mentioned above. The answer is that it is not possible to convert the information. However until now I was always using the method. Since the introduction of FF5, suddenly it does not work anymore.

Tried to send the .json-file so you could try it also. but the file is not accepted.

That will work if the file is a JSON file with the file extension missing, but if it is an HTML file (the topic of this thread) it ain't gonna work by renaming it to JSON from HTML.

@user78

Read the whole damn thread before putting your foot on your mouth!

You can't import a JSON bookmarks file, Firefox doesn't work that way.
You need to restore the JSON bookmark backups.
HTML bookmarks files are what the import function is for.

Restore - JSON = will overwrite existing bookmarks in Firefox
Import - HTML = will append (or add to) existing bookmarks in Firefox

dmcritchie and I both said that, plus Cor-el posted a hyperlink to a support article that said the same thing.
