Email links in Firefox 5.0 will not auto open in Outlook 2010 AND Windows Live Mail 2011
Outlook msg: General failure. An error occured in sending command to the application. Windows Line Mail: There was a problem sending command to the program.

It sounds as though you have testing with each of these programs in the Options dialog:
orange Firefox button or Tools menu > Options > Applications, searching for mailto

Firefox 5.0 Windows 7 Pro. Outlook 2010 Windows Live Mail 2011
In the article, only plugin.disable_full_page_plugin_for_types was present. After resetting then closing Firefox, normal service was resumed.
Links now opening from Outlook 2010 and Windows Live Mail 2011.
