CTRL + T Opens one Tab
CTRL + W Closes one Tab

How did you close the tabs previously?
If you use the close X on the title bar then you close the window with all tabs.
You need to use the close X on the tab.
You can also middle-click the tab with the mouse scroll wheel to close the tab.
