Why do the up/down and page up/down keys stop working in gmail?

Lately when using Gmail, the page up and down keys as well as the up and down keys fail to scroll the page. This seems to have started more and more after Gmail added some floating buttons to the top. It is possible to scroll with the wheel on the mouse and then sometimes the keys will work again. Even if it scrolls sometimes, it can get re-stuck at the top of the page.

This issue affects me in Firefox 5 and now in Firefox 6.

Failing to scroll with Page Up and Page Down is a problem caused by caret browsing. Temporary solution press F7 to toggle it off. For better solution to not just change about:config but to override it see

Using the mouse wheel to correct the problem would not fix caret browsing.

Slowness in Page Up and Down at GMail, and more so here at support.mozilla.com, I would tend to attribute to excessive style sheets.

Thank you for the prompt response and suggestions.

I toggled caret browsing on and off, and for better or worse the page up and down keys worked fine. This has been an intermittent issue, so I haven't been able to predict exactly when it will fail. The e-mail that I used to test it just now, didn't work an hour and a half ago.

Regardless of the caret browsing toggle, the up and down arrow keys failed to work, so there appears to be something else going on.

WinXP SP3 fully patched, FF 6.0.1 running as non-admin user. I have other issues that appear to be related to running as a non-admin user, but that appears to be improving overall.

After disabling caret browsing, I had to restart FF before navigation keys started working again. Prior to this, I saw no difference toggling this feature.
