I do not know what versions you have installed. Are you for instance using the current Release Firefox 12 and the Beta/Aurora Firefox 13. It is not recommended to run unsupported versions so Firefox 3.6 and Firefox 11 should no longer be used.
What it is important to keep is the Firefox profile, where settings bookmarks and passwords are stored. To complicate matters further, if you are running multiple versions of Firefox you should already have set up multiple profiles so that each version may have a unique profile. Backup each profile you have so that you may use the information if necessary.
- see backing up your information
- Do NOT use any option from Firefox or Windows that mentions removing personal information,
because that will destroy password and bookmarks etc. It will try to destroy profiles for all versions installed, and only luck and timely use of file restoration applications is likely to stand a chance of reversing this.
You should be able to uninstall Firefox from the Windows control panel but my advise is:
- do not uninstall anything until the profiles are safely backed up
- uninstall the out dated version not the current version
If you think there is a problem with using Firefox 12 please let us know, there should be a solution that does not require use of outdated versions.
11, 12 (12- starts up from standard icons the other to start need go to folder /FF/ and click exe file... ).
Something i did and all Firefox use same Profile... second install used custom install...
in control panel only initial install seems , only one Firefox item in add/remove programs - vista ultimate 64bit...
Firefox 11 will not be needed it is no longer secure or supported.
- Download the installer file for the correct current version (link) & save it somewhere that you can easily locate, such as the Windows Desktop.
- Please remember to backup the profile if you have bookmarks or passwords saved (see)
- Uninstall from the control panel,
- but do not delete personal information
- do not worry if it fails to uninstall or uninstalls both versions (because you have saved the profile and the installer file ?! )
- note Windows uses smoke & mirrors tricks to sometimes produce multiple entries (and changing fromXP to Win7 I now need to be aware of junction points)
- if necessary and you have problems uninstalling just delete the Firefox program folders (NOT normally the profile files)
- If Necessary reinstall Firefox by running the installer file
- if you have inadvertently lost profile information follow instructions from http://kb.mozillazine.org/Transferring_data_to_a_new_profile_-_Firefox using the backups you made
A similar procedure may be used to delete the new version, but that is not recommended. (Unless for instance: you are within a private intranet, behind sophisticated firewalls and with bare metal restoration methods; or running on a Virtual machine) You will put your personal data and your computer system at risk if you use insecure old versions of Firefox.
"Uninstall from the control panel, "
only one entry see so uninstall 1st installation, and delete folder of second installation? I guess the latter need manual delete...well?
Do you have two different Firefox installation folders in C:\Program Files ?
If there are two Firefox installations and you can't uninstall one of them then you can remove the installation folder yourself by deleting that folder.
YES...I have two different Firefox installation folders in C:\Program Files ... SO DELETE SECONDARY (C:\Program Files\FF) SEE IF WORKS MAIN(C:\Program Files\Firefox) AND MAY if i want UNINSTALL MAIN INSTALLATION AND INSTALL A HEALTHY VERSION NEWEST?
correct?
You can first uninstall the Firefox version that you can uninstall and then remove the program folders in case the other program folder wasn't removed by the uninstaller.
