Firefox upgraded, I got the restart prompt at the top, and when it restarted all my tabs, usually saved between sessions were gone.

Copying sessionstore.bak to sessionstore.js didn't work. I also have a sessionstore-1.js, but that seems to be a red herring.

The History > Recently Closed Windows menu is greyed out, before and after a restart with the backup.

If that sessionstore-1.js file is recent then you can still give it a try and rename the files to sessionstore.js to see if that brings back any of the tabs.
The presence of a numbered file is usually an indication that something has gone wrong at the time of its creation and that Firefox wasn't able to rename the numbered file to sessionstore.js
If this didn't help then that previous session is lost and you need to use the history or the cache to recreate the lost tabs.

Tried sessionstore-1.js, no luck.

sessionstore-1.js, and sessionstore.js/bak are all valid JSON according to json_verify, so surely this is a firefox bug?

If not, that's a lot of extremely important links gone! Is there a bugzilla I can vote on to try and get this stuff improved?

Firefox only keeps one session (the previous session) at most and doesn't create a backup, so you will have to do that yourself if tabs from a session are important.

You can do that by making a copy of the sessionstore.js file or use an extension.
