I'm running a drupal site with mixed HTTP and HTTPS pages.

The backend is a LEMP stack with Ubuntu Server 12.04. I'm using the secure pages drupal module to choose which pages and user roles should be secure. This works fine on Chrome and IE (Dear god what is wrong).

But on Firefox (24.0) when I logout from an account I get re-directed to a secure version of the homepage. And it then stays on an HTTPS for an anonymous user.

Secure pages are a heavier load and unsupported by a lot of caches, I'm keen to avoid them if it's not necessary (i.e. anonymous user). What could be happening behind the doors in Firefox? And how could I stop this?

If you visit some page via a secure connection then Firefox can prevail to use a secure connection and you may only be able to use a normal connection by removing all history items with a secure (https) connection.
