want a link to open in a new tab instead of replacing a current tab
when I click in mac mail, it replaces a website in a current tab. I want a link to open in a brand new tab of its own.

And now it's working. Maybe changing firefox to the default browser did it, or there was something in the automatic update May 9 that fixed it.

There are two ways from the mouse. Click the middle mouse button or scroll wheel. Or, right click on the link and select Open Link In New Tab / Window.
sorry, that doesn't work. In mac mail when I control-clicked (mac version of right click) the only option was open link -- and it replaced the awesome pandora tune i was listening to with this page.
Chrome automatically opens a new tab, I'm hoping for similar behavior from firefox.
...and firefox 29 hung when I tried to open a new tab. So back to ff for site debugging and back to chrome for regular use.
I'd rather use firefox because chrome is constantly doing background things that slow down my computer. But I need links to open in their own tab by default. (also more stable and not crash after limited use)
If there is a fix I'd be happy to try again. Thanks
I've looked thru my About:Config page, but could not see what setting to change.

You can override how external links are opened via the browser.link.open_newwindow.override.external pref. The meaning of the values of browser.link.open_newwindow.override.external are the same as for browser.link.open_newwindow
- 1: current tab; 2:new window; 3:new tab;
But I'd have to remember to change this with every firefox update.
