Hello. I am running Win 8.1, and I don't know which version of Firefox because I can't find "About Firefox" in firefox options. I downloaded Firefox two days ago, so it is a recent version of Firefox.

I get the following error message when viewing a web-page with what I think is an embedded video: the embedded video screenshot is replaced by a large gray box with the text "A plug-in is needed to display this content". No other information is given. When viewing YouTube, I have no problem viewing video content at that site.

1) How do I find out which version of Firefox I have? 2) How do I fix the problem of "A plug-in is needed to display this content"?

Thanks

Hi,

I can give you some help. On menu bar: click Help > About Firefox to find out what version of Firefox you have (currently you have v 38.0).

I think you need Adobe's Flash player to watch videos on you tube (I'm not on youtube myself that often).

You find the flash player here: https://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/ CORRECTION: Download FlashPlayer From Here: https://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/distribution3.html

P.S. Thanks jscher2000 D.S.

Warning based on some recent threads: The main Flash download page has a checkbox to uncheck if you do not want McAfee software, but if you use Adblock Plus, you might not see that checkbox.

To get a Flash installer that doesn't include any extras, you can use this page (the version for "plugin-based browsers"): https://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/distribution3.html

Hello. Thank you Bobby R. for your suggestion. As I said in my original post, I have NO PROBLEMS when viewing videos at Youtube.

So if Adobe Flashplayer is needed for viewing videos on Youtube, and I can view videos on Youtube without getting an error message, then something else is causing the error message I saw earlier.

Hi

Okey, sorry......

But I just been over at YouTube and looked at their help section. I got several links about "missing plug-ins" when I did a search. Unfortunally, for some unknown reason, I only got blank pages when I tried looking the links up.... maybe you have better luck if you look it up?

Again, sorry for poor suggestion earlier......

 B.R.

Can you post a link to a publicly accessible page (i.e. no authentication or signing on required)?

Then we can check the code.

Did you instal the Shockwave Flash plugin?

You can find the latest Flash player versions for Firefox on this page:

You can check whether you are using Flash or the HTML5 player on YouTube by right-clicking the player and checking the bottom line on the menu.

Hello. Thankn you everyone for your replies.

I see this error message when viewing blog posts at Daily Kos.com. I have an account at that site, and I am logged into that account when I see the error message. Anyone can go to the Daily Kos web-site and see the blogs that give me the error message, but of course not using my account.

I don't know if I have the Shockwave Flash plug-in - how do I check?

On Youtube, if I right-click the player window, it tells me I am using "Youtube HTML5 video player".

That is the Flash plugin that is used.

You can see the installed plugins on the Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Plugins page (about:addons).

Your system details list doesn't show that the Shockwave Flash plugin is installed and enabled. You can find links of the latest Shockwave Flash player for Firefox on this page:

You can verify on the Adobe Flash Players Test Page that the Flash plugin is working and which version you have.
