I simply want to configure Firefox to open a .txt file in notepad or notepad++. I have tried modifying the mimeType file with no success. In Firefox Application Options there is a nice Content Type and Action but no way to add anything. The help page says "Entries are added automatically when you download files and select actions for them". So I go searching the web for a .txt file to download and can't find one for heavens sake. Why is this so difficult? Why can't Firefox have a simple page where you can add file types and select what application you want to open the file type? Please help

What happens when you open a '.txt' file that is on your own machine? Does it open in Notepad or Firefox?

That is not easily possible. Firefox opens a (text) file that is send as text/plain in a tab. To open a file in Notepad you would have to view the page source (right-click:View Page Source) and set Notepad as the external application to view the page source.
