How can I arrange for a clicked link (say, in a search engine) to open in another tab on same window?

Firefox used to open a clicked link in a new tab on the same window without having to hold the "Cntl" key. If I clicked an item in a search engine (or anything else) the new tab would contain what I clicked and automatically go to the new tab.

Is there a way to set this function in preferences?

Thanks in advance for your help. I appreciate it!

Hi BudParker, that's not a built-in feature of Firefox.

A common way that users have direct ALL links to open in a new tab would be an extension such as Tab Mix Plus.

For search engine sites in particular, their preferences pages often include a checkbox to launch results in a new window, which Firefox diverts to a new tab. For example:

https://www.google.com/preferences => "Where results open"
