Can I tell T/bird to download my emails and delete them from my servers mailbox when it downloads??

I'm an old Outlook user and it would delete collected emails from the servers mailbox. I now keep getting notifications from the server saying my mailbox is almost full. If I delete them from the servers box they disappear from my computer. Is there a way to empty server box but keep emails on my computer? Thanks in advance.

If you create your account in Thunderbird as POP, yes you can. If you create it as IMAP (the default) then no you can not.

Which is you account configured as?
