Ever since the last update of Firefox Google translate will not work. Regardless of if the add-on is there, it returns error 400. There have been problems with the interface between the two in the past, which typically requires constant clearing of the cache and deleting translate cookies, but nothing works anymore. Chrome is fine, so it is definitely a Firefox issue.

SHIELD ICON Tracking Protection

One issue that seems more common lately is Firefox's Tracking Protection feature. When it is blocking content in a page, a shield icon will appear at the left end of the address bar next to the padlock icon. This article has more info on managing this feature: Tracking Protection

There is no shield on Google translate, it just doesn't work. No matter whether the web page is a secured or unsecured site, it returns error message 400. If one is trying to access a translation of a cached page (say for a PDF), it no longer translates that either. A confirm you are not a robot box comes up, but will not move from the page, regardless of if you click on the box or not.

The consistent result for any web translation is: 400. That’s an error.

Your client has issued a malformed or illegal request. That’s all we know. The issue is only happening on Firefox since the latest update. It is not happening on Chrome, Edge or Opera.

HI, use it all the time and never have problems so the issue is specific to your system.

NO info about your extensions so please do this : Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Firefox Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that temporarily turns off hardware acceleration, resets some settings, and disables add-ons (extensions and themes).

If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu:

  • Click the menu button New Fx Menu, click Help Help-29 and select Restart with Add-ons Disabled.

If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:

  • On Windows: Hold the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
  • On Mac: Hold the option key while starting Firefox.
  • On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run firefox -safe-mode
    (you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)

When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "Start in Safe Mode".

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, theme, or hardware acceleration. Please follow the steps in the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article to find the cause.

To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.

I didn't try your fix @Pkshadow as I urgently needed to use translate. I had already deleted Firefox from my system entirely and reloaded it. That fixed the problem except for translating the cache versions, which I could do until the last Firefox update.

If clearing cookies didn't help then It is possible that the cookies.sqlite file in the Firefox profile folder that stores the cookies got corrupted.

  • rename/remove cookies.sqlite (cookies.sqlite.old) and if present delete cookies.sqlite-shm and cookies.sqlite-wal in the Firefox profile folder with Firefox closed in case cookies.sqlite got corrupted.

You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.


Do a malware check with several malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.

Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware. All these programs have free versions.

Make sure you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

You can also do a check for a rootkit infection with TDSSKiller.
